Previously on D7…

April 12, 2011

It’s been a while since we’ve let you know about our goings-on, but make no mistake: HUGE things have been happening for D7.

February brought about an amazing opportunity – opening for and performing with Grammy-award winning singer, composer, and songwriter Imogen Heap!

D7 performed with Imogen heap during her sold-out Ellipse tour in Cape Town on 4 & 5 February. Photo by Ross Hiller.

After an incredible first leg in Jo’burg, the UK-based singer of “Hide and Seek” fame took her sold-out Ellipse tour to the beautiful Paul Cluver wine estate in Elgin, just outside Cape Town. The wooded amphitheatre proved the perfect setting for Imogen’s show, which was itself less of a concert and more of an inner view of Imogen’s creative process. Using several different microphones, live looping machines, numerous instruments and her own rich voice, she built each song piece by piece and took the audience along for a magical ride.

We were incredibly honoured to open both shows for Imogen, but the best part by far was performing her hit song “Earth” with the lady herself. Our friends Mikhaela Kruger, Emma Van Heyningen, and Chad Zerf joined us on stage for what was an incredible acapella experience.

While she’s busy working on her next album, we’d like to send a huge thank you to “Immi” for giving us such an incredible opportunity. She is truly one of the most warm, down-to-earth and genuine artists we’ve worked with.

Special thanks go to our engineer Philip Burger, stylist Natasha du Toit, and photographer Ross Hiller – and most importantly to event promoter Charl Van Heyningen for taking such good care of us during the weekend!

Imogen Heap’s Supporting Acts Announced

January 31, 2011

Via BUZ Publicity

Cape Town features strongly in the supporting acts just announced for the avante garde  British musician’s SA shows

It has just been revealed that the widely hailed ‘progressive’ musician Yoav will be the support act for the Johannesburg leg of Ms Heap’s tour, while the slick outfit D7 will be kicking off the Cape Town shows. Both support acts will be performing Ms Heap’s hit song, Earth, with her.

D7

The fresh and exciting all-male group D7 (you guessed it; seven of ‘em!) hail from The Mother City, and have been wowing audiences with their funky, sassy mix of a’capella and beatboxing. They’ve also been setting more than a few hearts aflutter with their sexy, stylish stage presentation!

D7 offer up fresh interpretations of the classic, all-gold sounds of artists such as The Temptations, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles and The Chiffons, whilst also taking on more contemporary sounds, such as those of Coldplay and Goldfish, Jason Mraz amongst many others. The lads are deeply honoured to be opening for the great Ms Heap, and have added five more performers to the mix, including two girls.

Yoav

Cape Town-born singer/songwriter Yoav was gigging in New York City when he began developing an interest in electronic music and the club/dance culture that surrounded it. He was intrigued by the challenge of infusing his more traditional singer/songwriter compositions with this electronic vibe, and, in the process, developed a more rhythmic, percussive way of playing the guitar and writing his music.

Yoav moved to the U.K. in 2006, where he eventually signed with the label Field Recordings. He’s really excited about bringing his sounds back to the country of his birth.

Sold Out Shows

“We’ve been delighted with the public response to the tour,” says an elated Charl van Heyningen, the show’s promoter. “Both the Cape Town shows are sold out, and the first leg up in Jo’burg went remarkably well.

Surprise Guest Artists

January 30, 2011

D-seven (D7 Live) will be pulling out all the stops this weekend when they open for UK Senstation, Imogen Heap at Paul Cluver Amphitheater this weekend.

D-seven first met Just Jinjer front man, Ard Matthews at Paul Cluver Amphitheater over a year ago when they were a curtain raiser for the super band just after they returned from LA. They perform  an a’capella rendition of What He Means and Ard Matthews will be joining them on stage for this track.

To cap it all off, Zolani Mahola, the very bubbly & incredible lead singer of Freshlyground will be joining them for a surprise song. Zolani’s philosophy is simple: ” all of this life is an experience and it makes sense to me to make it an enjoyable one.” We hope that her debut guest performance with the a’capella group that is having its biggest stage performance yet, will be most enjoyable and a truly amazing experience for her and them.

Farewell… Its Been an Honour

October 20, 2010

Ladies & Gents…

It deeply saddens us to have to say goodbye and goodluck to two of our most prolific soloists and members. In every vocal ensemble members come and go, but these two fine gentlemen have stuck with us from the start. As from the end of Dec 2010 , D-seven will be saying goodbye to Mr Scott Lee-Jones & Mr Dylan Martin. For various reasons, they have decided to move on and focus on different parts in their lives. We can only wish them goodluck , and thank them for all that they have brought to the group, in terms of musicality, friendship, experience, expertise and just awesomeness. We hope that they will feature as guests artists every now and then, but till then they are going to be saying cheers to D-seven and moving on. To Scott & Dyl its been an absolut amazing experience, honour and journey singing, working and performing with you both. You have left massive shoes to fill, and you will be sorely missed…  thanks for everything you have added to D-seven in the last few years…

On another sad note, we will be temporarily saying cheers to Eugene Gouws who will be taking a 6month sabatical to venture north to Norway in search of the Ring, and education. He has made us very proud and been accepted to do part of his honors course in Choral Conducting at one of the most prestigious Universities in Norway. He is scheduled for return in June 2011, however one never knows what Eugene may do… All we do know is that he will be missed by all, and we hope we can have him back, when he is done becoming famous up north!

Rocks Hard but Treads Lightly

October 8, 2010

D-seven is proud to be back at Daisies this year, but this time we want to make sure we offset the amount of carbon we will emit over the weekend. Yet like always we still wanna roll in style. We know that at first it may be seen as  not supporting the vibe that Rocking The Daisies creates… well we have done our homework.

We worked out exactly how much our BIG car emits per km,which is 346g/km, and based on calculations on distance traveled,  we give off 45kg’s of carbon emission on the trip alone. Since it holds 6 guys, we are leaving 4 cars behind. However, its not just the drive there…We figured we will tripple this based on 18 of us partying up a storm. And so we are looking at 150Kg’s of carbon emitted by D-seven over the weekend.

Here are the facts: (Courtesy of Greenpop)

4500km in a medium sized car emits 1 Carbon Tonne.

6 Trees will sequester 1 tonne in a year

Our tip emits 0.045tones of carbon there & back.

So to make sure our weekend remains green overall…

D-seven along with Extreme Limousine are planting 20trees through Greenpop which will sequst 3 tonnes of Carbon in the first year…

… so we planted 20 trees to repent for our ride… what did you do…
